Every time she called during my normal work hours,I told her I was in the middle of work and couldn't talk. So she started calling me in the evening. I still don't think she is totally convinced of my job.
November 6
Yes! I feel your pain. Tell me, how in the world did you finally convince her? :)

If you can figure out how to hide from your mother let me know. Mom, I love her to death, but it's taken me years to convince her that I'm actually working in my studio during the day, not home doing nothing. She tells people, my brother works, and…

Who I am!

My name is Karen, but i prefer Keke..........Yea, it's kinda dorky but i like it. I used to teach 8th grade science and math.....I did it for 8 years and loved the kids but i wasn't happy with the administration so i took a chance and opened a preschool out of my home.
As a kid i HATED writing. In high school, my English teacher gave me a D+ on a creative writing piece that i worked hard on. After that, anything that required me to write scared the heck out of me. Two and a half years ago, I had the students doing a forensic activity that required them to solve a crime. I then had them create a story that would go along with it. For some reason, i wanted to do it too. I shared it with the kids and they loved it.........I shared it with the language arts teacher and he loved it............and that was all I needed to fall in love with writing.... Now, i have five children books and two YA novels that I’m trying hard to get published.........I'm past that shell shock stage, the one where you realize the amount of MS sent to publishers a day and the amount of rejections they send back are almost the same! I'm on to the 'write, revise, edit, submit, submit, submit, submit...................and never give up!

Hi, Karen!
Are you still in Athol?
That's my back yard.

Hi Karen,

I just sent you my email address. I'm sorry to hear about the non-support on the hubby arena. That must be really hard. (Initially typed 'heard.')

Hi Keke,

I just left my critique on the PB Discussion Board for your story. Sorry it took me so long. Good luck with refining it!

Kiki,

I'm sorry about the rejection letter. Perhaps it was a personal letter? Those letters are feathers in your cap to wear proudly. I meant to answer your message about quick queries. I've been to two. Each were 5 minutes. I read advice to hone your pitch to two minutes and leave 3 minutes for response and interaction.

I wrote my hook, including the genre and word count, reduced the print and pasted it on a 3X5 notecard and practiced it. The trick is to make it enticing and leave room for the agent or editor to ask questions. Both times, I was asked to submit the manuscript, ultimately rejected!

At least you have a different idea to present to this agent. I would have some questions ready. If he/she doesn't say so, ask if it's a marketable idea. What direction do you think I should go in with this manuscript? What genres are you interested in and would you be open to reviewing more of my work?

Both times, the editors and I had a real conversation. If nothing else comes of it, at least you have made yourself known and passed the first quick query test! Good luck!

Kiki,

I am going to the conference all three days. I tried to reply to the thread, and it looks like Jim sent my message. Mystery to me!

Hi Karen, I'm missing the conference this year because I can't seem to organize myself very well. I was supposed to attend and give the opening talk with Anna Boyles, but also found myself a free trip to France with a bunch of teenagers. I figured that I'd like to see France and hanging out with the teens might be great for my YA novel, so sadly I need to wait until next year's conference and probably won't be asked to speak again... I sure wish those dates didn't conflict though. Have a great time.

I live in Belfast. Between Searsport and Camden.
I grew up in Morrill, just a couple miles from Belfast. I haven't moved too far...lol.
Horses were my life, that's all I lived and breathed. We had an Appaloosa Farm. My grandmother raised Morgans and her sister raised Arabians. Horses was all I knew. All our friends had horses....horses owned us...not the other way around. lol

Hi Keke! So glad you found me!
I haven't been on here much, so haven't had a lot of time to dig around for friends on here.
I don't have any horse either. They are a lot of work! I had them growing up as a kid until my mid 20's. That was a lot of years of shoveling! lol.
I now enjoy photographing and painting them and remembering all the great times I had.

Hey Karen,
I left an answer in the FAQ comments about Friday and Saturday. I'll follow up on your Quick Query question there too.
