"Rock Stars of Reading" audio/video series starts 3/31/09

In November 2008, the Just One More Book!! children's book internet radio program (http://www.justonemorebook.com) set out on a six-day road trip to live, eat, socialize, paint and read with children's book creators in New England. Producers Andrea Ross and Mark Blevis and their two daughters, Lucy (9) and Bayla (7), lived by a tight schedule of studio visits, lunches, dinners, round table discussions and gallery visits. The trip was video and audio recorded and has been produced as a series of… Continue

Spammers and Antispammers

You may have noticed a spammer in our midst this evening, leaving many many advertisements for a "free ringtone service" on the pages of many many participants. This person has been banned from the network and all of their "contributions" permanently deleted. There are two ways we could try to prevent this from happening in the future. We could moderate our membership, which would be an inconvenience to new people signing up, or we could add a couple moderators with the ability to take down new… Continue

2009 Memory Fund Scholarships Available

In July 2005, we lost two friends and passionate contributors to children's literature: Illustrator Ann Barrow and Writer Ruth Landers Glass. This loss inspired New England SCBWI to begin thinking about ways to honor these and other lost friends. Because SCBWI was so important to both Ann and Ruth, we have decided the best way to remember these two remarkable people would be to continue their passion for helping other writers and illustrators by offering a scholarship in each of their names tha… Continue

Our Reporter in the Field is...You?

This upcoming weekend is the SCBWI Winter Conference in New York City. I'm not going to be there but I'm looking forward to hearing all about it from friends, from blogs, and this year, from MyNESCBWI. Thanks to our new social network, those of us who can't be there in person can still get a taste of the action from others who can. First, Anindita Basu Sempere will attempt to live-blog from the conference through the magic of Twi… Continue

We've Got You Covered

I'm expanding on the tutorial on the topic of adding images to MyNESCBWI because the Cover Art Gallery now has some added exposure as a widget on each page of the New England SCBWI website. If you are a member of SCBWI, a participant in MyNESCBWI, and the author and/or illustrator of a book for children or young adults, you can have your cover art included in the gallery and as par… Continue

Privacy Please

New features get added to the social network every month or two, which is nice. This time around there's a new feature accessible from the "privacy" section of the settings that allows participants to choose who gets to see their My Page and list of friends. You can continue to allow your My Page to be accessible to the public or you can now restrict it to just MyNESCBWI members or just your friends. And you have always had the option to choose a privacy option for your images, videos, and blog… Continue

I've Got Your Picture, I've Got Your Picture, I'd Like a Million of Them All to Myself...

As I promised in my blog entry on semantics, here is a primer on how to... Add Some Images ...to MyNESCBWI. This is something I'm still trying to figure out for myself, because there are so many ways that images can be used on this network.
  • They can be added to blog entries
  • They can be added to discussion threads
  • They can be uploaded to your My Page
  • They can be organized into galleries
  • They can be tagged to appear in group galleries

Semantics of a Social Network

A lot of social networks like ours allow members to upload photos into albums. Thanks to some heavy edits to our language script, MyNESCBWI allows participants to upload images into galleries. In case you were wondering, here's why... Members vs. Participants The way to become a member of New England SCBWI is: a) to be a member in good standing of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators; and b) to l… Continue

Reload, Read, Repeat...

Most information and activity is summarized on the main page of MyNESCBWI, making it easy to... Check For Updates ...by refreshing the page. As the main page is currently configured, three columns of summary content flow down from the navigation bar. Any time you visit or reload the main page, you can check for items that are changed or updated. During busy periods you can keep MyNESCBWI open in the background as you do other things and reload every once in a while to see what other pe… Continue

A Little Group Therapy

Poking around MyNESCBWI, you may have noticed that a navigation item called "Groups". You may have asked yourself, "What are groups? What are their features? Can I join them? Can I start my own? And what sorts of groups would appeal to a community of authors and illustrators anyway?" These answers and more as we explore ways to... Join a Group Groups are sets of like-minded MyNESCBWIans who have joined together to form their own social mini-network tied into the main social network. Gro… Continue

I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends

In a way, we're all friends here. We all share a passion for children's literature and a common interest in elevating the level of our craft. We all know what it's like to put in long, thankless hours in the pursuit of creative perfection. And we're all friendly and genuinely nice people who are worth getting to know better. However, in the language of social networking websites, "friends" are permissions-based double opt-in reciprocal linking relationships defined by shared access to respectiv… Continue

In my continuing "things you can do on MyNESCBWI" series, I've covered My Page and Blogs, which are your own web page and blog that are located here on the network. You can share comments on these with other participants, but in order to really get interactive you should... Join the Discussion Forum The forums are threaded di… Continue

Blog, blog, blog, blog... It's better than bad, it's good!

I'm sitting in an Internet cafe in Pennsylvania, slowly digesting cider-glazed turkey, gluten-free stuffing, and Thai cranberry sauce from Thanksgiving. And yet, with a turkey-coma, travel lag, and limited connectivity, I'm still able to share a few tryptophan-laced thoughts with the MyNESCBWI community (62 members strong, and growing). That's how easy it is to... Add a Blog Post Your MyNESCBWI account comes with a blogging platform that includes the usual bells and whistles:… Continue

My My Page or Your My Page?

I'm so amazed and grateful for all the folks who accepted my invitation to check out this new social site, kick the tires, and drive it around the block. The natural next question becomes, what next? What's it all for, and what can you do once you're here? I'll post some suggestions starting with this one: Customize your My Page Everyone who signs up for a MyNESCBWI account gets a My Page. You can get there by clicking on the My Page link in the top menu, or on your picture or name anyw… Continue

Welcome to MyNESCBWI beta

If you're familiar with Facebook or MySpace, you should already have a pretty good idea of what MyNESCBWI is all about. This social networking site will allow New England members of the SCBWI to get to know each other, organize groups, learn more about events, or just procrastinate a bit until that artist's/writer's block passes. The suggestion has been made that, like the New England SCBWI email list, MySCBWI should be open to SCBWI members in other regions as long as they don't mind our local… Continue
