In a way, we're all friends here. We all share a passion for children's literature and a common interest in elevating the level of our craft. We all know what it's like to put in long, thankless hours in the pursuit of creative perfection. And we're all friendly and genuinely nice people who are worth getting to know better.
However, in the language of social networking websites, "friends" are permissions-based double opt-in reciprocal linking relationships defined by shared access to respective information. That's what we're talking about when we say...
Make Some Friends!
At the moment there are 82 participants in MyNESCBWI, with more joining all the time. Paging through the participants list, accessible by clicking the "Participants" link on the navigation bar, you will probably see people you already know. You will get to know others through their blog entries, forum posts, or chat-room participation. This is your pool of potential friends.
Wherever on the site that you see a participant's linked name or avatar, you're only two mouse-clicks away from making a friend request. If the other person accepts your request, or if you accept theirs, then congratulations...I now pronounce you friend and friend! You can also make friends by inviting someone new to join MyNESCBWI or if you're already friends with someone in another Ning social network and both of you sign up here.
A block of friends will appear on your My Page, and you may appear on theirs. You will also be able to assign special permissions to your friends--for example, allowing only friends to view or comment on your images or blog entries, either by default or on a per-item basis.
You have total control over who gets to be on your friends list. You decide how active you want to be in making friend requests, and how permissive you are in accepting them. You can also "unfreind" anyone at any time and they don't get any special notification when you do.
Remember, MyNESCBWI is more fun with friends!
